Dylan started his birthday weekend off by celebrating at preschool with bringing birthday cupcakes to share with his friends and they made him a crown at school to wear for the day. Then after school we headed to Dylan's favorite park for some play time fun.
On Saturday the kids and I woke up and started cleaning and running errands for Dylan's birthday party on Sunday. Dylan went down for his normal 3 hour nap (yep, Dylan still loves his sleep time even at 3) while Ava and I then started wrapping gifts and decorating. Soon after that, Grampy and Sharona arrived to celebrate Dylan's birthday.Grampy and I tackled a big project in the back yard with the trampoline (thanks Dad), while Sharona, Dylan and Ava spent lots of time on the slip and slide and...
...jumping on the trampoline while spraying each other to cool off and...
...of course having water fights. Can you tell Ava was determined to get her Grampy wet.
Next we headed out for dinner for yummy Mexican food and then came home to...
...open presents and...
...set up Dylan's new train set from his grandparents.And of course we made sure to sing happy birthday and eat yummy cake that Sharona and Ava baked.
By Sunday it was finally time for Dylan's birthday party. Simon finished up a huge race he timed at the Bronco's stadium and came home to finalize the last of Dylan's party set up before friends arrived at 3pm. ...breaking open a Thomas The Train pinata that we filled with candy and toys while...
...also making sure to take a break from all the active fun and eat their pinata candy.
The day started off hot, but ended perfect for an early evening BBQ with friends.
Dylan loved his Thomas The Train ice cream cake. Dylan is a huge Thomas The Train fan, but has never even watched a full cartoon episode of Thomas. He just really loves trains. I'm so happy Dylan had a great birthday celebration weekend.

Dylan has really grown up this past year so here's a quick summary. Dylan is still growing tall and hanging in at the 96th percentile for height and 50th percent for weight. He is loving preschool, learning tons, and hearing much better with his clogged tubes now being out and thus pronouncing his l's and v's much better with no new ear infections since the tubes were removed!!!
Dylan continues to ride super fast on his Strider bike, has so much fun playing with his two good buddies in the neighborhood, and never says no to playing any sport with a ball. Most of all Dylan loves swinging and swimming so we were very excited to find a preschool that had outdoor swim lessons all summer long. Now that summer is over his preschool curriculum has picked up. I was a little nervous because Dylan was the youngest in his class, but he has already improved and moved up a table. Great job buddy.
Dylan and Ava continue to play so well together because Dylan is still too young and easy going to know any better when "Sister" (as Dylan now calls her) has Dylan playing house, babies, barbies, and dress up with her.
When playing on his own, Dylan enjoys organizing and grouping all his cars and trucks by color, size or type, and building up his fire station and farm or pushing around all his trains. He's not too patient with coloring still, but loves to trace letters, count really well, and Dylan suddenly really, really enjoys playing with play doh. He's also very curious about bugs and worms and getting dirty and he's been known to be very willing and come down into the basement a few times to kill a spider for me. He's big into wrestling with his dad most nights before bed and if there's music on (which is most of the time in our house) then you'll likely catch Dylan doing his crazy dancing in the basement.
Dylan is super funny and makes us laugh so hard we cry and we just want to squeeze him with hugs when he's being so cute and funny. On the same extreme of being funny, however, Dylan can be super grumpy especially when he hasn't slept his normal 12 hours a night plus his 2 to 3 hour nap each day. He has made big improvements in this area by not being such a grumpy bear because we've been working with him on being a "happy bear" in the mornings, but he's been known to flat out say "I don't want to be a happy bear this morning." So we all know in our house that when Dylan wakes up it's best to just give him his quite space until he's ready to talk to us. We're glad those days are happening less and less often however.
There's not much that Dylan says no to when it comes to playing outside and being active which sometimes scares Simon and I when Dylan's sees a motor cross or dirt bike flip in the air and asks if he can "do that with his bike." But, he's still at the age where even though he might talk about big trucks/tractors and Grampy's backhoe or even horses, if he actually sees something that big he's quick to have mom hold him away at a safe distance.
As much as Dylan is a tough kid, plays hard like a boy should, and is sometimes so active that he doesn't want to stop to take the time to poop (literally), he's also one to snuggle tons at night and gives the best hugs. I love those moments of which I really try to cherish those quite, snuggle times at night. We're so proud of you Dylan and we love you so very much. Now, just stop growing up so fast.

Happy Birthday Dylan! I feel like you were just born too! :) Looks like a very fun birthday....I think you and Brady would be friends with your love for trains (and he doesn't like the shows either)....you sound like a fun 3 year old to be around!
Happy Birthday Dylan! (a little late:) Glad you had such a fun birthday weekend! I sure wish my kids were as good of sleepers as you..I'm not sure what I would do with a 3 hour break in the middle of the day!
